I realize that the vast majority of those reading this article have never considered purchasing a laser engraver. Because, as we know, these are very specialized products that have always been aimed at a specific assembly area. However, recently, things have changed a lot, and more and more people are curious about it, who are wondering “what can be done with a laser engraving machine”. Look at it this way: a laser engraver is a device that is very similar to a 3D printer but at the same time very different.
It must also be said that companies have focused a lot on this category of products, and for a year now they have been proposing more simple and easy-to-use models. One of everythingxTool D1 Prothe evolution of one of the most successful models of the brand, which comes updated with various features, such as electronics and a laser module and can also be purchased in a more powerful version, with an engraving power of 20 watts.
xTool D1 Pro review: ‘Pro’ quality and power, affordable
Ejection from the box
Package packaging xTool D1 Pro Basically identical to those of other laser engraving tools. Also in this case, the product will arrive with cardboard packaging completely disassembled and with all the accessories necessary for assembly along with a pair of glasses to protect the eyes from the laser.
One of the features that makes thexTool D1 Pro Is the simplicity of assembly. Let me be clear, there are many screws and it will always require a little patience, but we are finally in the presence of a model that can also be assembled by less experienced people, also thanks to the excellent instruction manual with very clear pictures. This may seem like a trifle to you, but believe me, it is not.
Design and features
With a large engraving area of 43 x 40 cm, thexTool D1 Pro It is mainly made entirely of aluminium. The chassis is very solid and all contact points between the various sections of the chassis are millimeter accurate. Basically, this engraver is capable of working on materials larger than an A3 sheet of paper, with a smaller overall footprint than other models we’ve been able to test, with an added benefit for those who don’t have much room available in the place to store an engraver.
The cables to be connected are well organized, and the connectors in the chassis are placed in well logical areas, in order to also improve cable management. All inscription connections are placed on the front, on the right, and include a USB port for connecting to a computer, an input for a memory card, an antenna for connecting to WiFi networks, and also, of course, the input for the power supply.
Then the device’s on-off switch was inserted into the front hull, which is not accompanied by any system for instantaneous blocking of the system, nor with a key for activation. However, it does incorporate a flame detector, which automatically deactivates the excavator in the event of small fires, and a gyroscope for the same purpose but which will activate if the excavator must be tilted during operation.
The idea that the brand should give users the possibility to purchase additional feet which, linked to the feet already in the structure, will provide the possibility of raising the center of gravityxTool D1 Pro up to 90 mm, to allow it to be operated even on products with a higher height.
xTool D1 Pro It can be purchased in three versions, which differ fundamentally in the power of the built-in laser unit. There is a 5w version, a 10w version, and a 20w version. We received the version with a 10-watt laser unit for testing which, like other units that can be selected during the purchase phase, features a compact spot system.
Basically, by compressing the size of the light spot that will then engrave or cut, there will be a subsequent increase in energy density due to the concentration of energy which, in turn, will allow higher precision engravings and deeper cuts on materials: in the 10w model the dimensions of the compressed spot are 0.08 x 0.06 millimeters. , excellent parameters that are hard to find in other lasers with the same power.
Then there is a little gem in the laser unit of thexTool D1 Pro: The plastic protective housing in which the diode is wrapped shall be manufactured in such a way as to prevent exposure of the engraving to smoke or dust resulting from contact of the laser with the material on which it will operate. And this is precisely one of the little things that no brand attaches importance to, which nonetheless greatly improves the engraving result.
What doesn’t drive me crazy about the system xTool built is the laser focus. Let me be clear, it’s always accurate and it’s practically impossible to make a mistake, but to change the height from the embossing point it would be necessary to lower a metal guide built laterally into the unit and unscrew a screw which is particularly tricky to reach, especially if you have large hands. In short, I would have preferred the brand to use something immediate and simple to play around with.
How to use the xTool D1 Pro Laser Engraving Machine
In addition to all the models we tested, even withxTool D1 Pro It is important to remember that it is an open pit tool and therefore will generate a lot of smoke and unpleasant odors. And that’s normal: it’s a laser engraver, which means it will burn the surfaces it’s being engraved on to work. For this reason, my advice is to use the product only in a well-ventilated environment, because its structure does not require the use of a ventilation box.
In terms of ease of use, xTool D1 Pro It’s accompanied by a particular feature that I’ve practically never found in any model I’ve had a chance to test: a dedicated app. Let me be clear, it can still be used with Lightburn which is the most popular app in the world of laser engraving, available for Windows and Mac, but for a fee, and it can also be used via Laserbox on iPhone and Android.
But in addition to the typical applications that we have so far learned to know by heart, xTool D1 Pro It can also be used with xTool Creative Space, the proprietary application with which the brand has greatly simplified the management of lasers and their settings.
Its use is really simple. Just install it and connect the laser to your computer via USB (or via WiFi) and you’re done. The app integrates several types of shapes and text to get you started with the engraver, which is accompanied by some (simple) vector drawing tools.
The good thing is that thanks to the project card you can also view the materials used and detailed instructions, including the settings that will be given to the device based on the material. In short, it is a simple application, yet it makes the process of engraving or cutting accessible to everyone.
Obviously, once all the key factors of engraving or cutting are clear, and after the concept of laser engraving or cutting is mastered, one will probably start using software such as Lightburn or Laser GBL, but the fact that the brand has thought of its own software solution is one Details that I liked very much.
Price and considerations
selling pricexTool D1 Pro It’s $849.00, but with the box below you can buy it at a discount of $699.99, or about €677 at current exchange rates. A price in line with what the market currently offers in terms of laser engraving machines, with the difference that in this case we are talking about a product full of features and above all easy to use.
And perhaps the simplicity of use, also thanks to the proprietary application ideal for less experienced people, and the simplicity of assembly are the strong points ofxTool D1 Pro Because when you want to make products like laser engraving tools go “mainstream”, simplicity is precisely one of the factors to focus on in order to make even the least experienced in this sector realize that it is possible to use these devices even without any experience.
