Windows 11 22H2: Microsoft confirms problems with Remote Desktop

According to the Redmond company itself, the remote desktop application under Windows 11 22H2 stop answering correctly when connecting through an RD Gateway or RD Connection Broker.

After installing Windows 11, version 22H2 (also known as Windows 11 2022 Update), the Windows Remote Desktop application may become unresponsive when connecting through an RD Gateway or RD Connection Broker.


This issue can be observed when the client is in the “Loading the virtual machine” or “Configuring the remote connection” steps and can occur regardless of the OS version installed on the remote machine. In some cases, you may get the error message “Remote Desktop Services session has ended”.

However, Microsoft says home users are unlikely to experience this issue because the connection process is different.

However, the company has provided a simple workaround involving the use of task manager. So if the remote desktop application stops responding, you can at least temporarily fix it by doing the following.

  1. Press the key combination Ctrl+Shift+Esc on the keyboard.
  2. Select the entry processes from the menu on the left
  3. Locate the process mstsc.exe in the displayed list.
  4. Right-click the process name and select the entry end activity from the context menu.
