Verdict:

Despite its very low price, the Asus Vivobook has the necessary equipment, such as a 14-inch display that displays images in high resolution (unlike devices whose screen only supports 1366 x 768 pixel mode), to perform all daily tasks in good conditions: check Emails, browsing the web, viewing photos or streaming videos, etc. In addition, the relatively recent (2021) Core i3 processor offers better performance than the Celeron or Pentium chips generally found in laptops sold at this price.

What screen format and definition should you choose?

In terms of display, laptops have a screen in 16:9 (or 16:10) format, or in 3:2 format. The latter format – which is much rarer – is more suitable for office use (Word, Excel, etc.), while compatible The 16:9 and 16:10 modes are more compatible with multimedia use.

There is also the issue of identification. Full HD mode is the most popular. To display more information, you can choose a monitor that supports a more precise definition, higher than Full HD, without falling to extremes, such as the 4K mode which – on a 13.3-inch screen – seems completely useless to us.

4K definition, displayed on a screen with a diagonal of less than 15.6 inches, makes it difficult to read characters without using the Windows scaling option. And if you activate the latter with a zoom factor of 150 or 200%, you might as well pay less for a configuration with a native Full HD screen!

Photo 14: Which laptop under 1000 euros would you choose for work?

Another possible solution: You can be content with a basic (Full HD) monitor if the configuration has an HDMI video output or a Thunderbolt-compatible USB-C port. Thus, once you are back at home or at your workplace, you can connect your laptop to an external monitor that is larger in size and with better definition (if it is QuadHD or 4K).

There is no dedicated graphics chip

As our selection shows, none of these configurations, designed primarily for office use, has a dedicated graphics chip.

Thus, the graphics performance depends entirely on the graphics chip integrated into the processor (Intel Iris Xe for the 11th and 12th generation Intel chips).

Of course, this is not able to compete with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 or 3050 Ti chip, which can be found in gaming laptops marketed between 900 and 1000 €.

But the latter would have a significant drawback: a limited autonomy, which should not guarantee a full day’s operation. Power or autonomy, you choose!

Webcam and microphone, the two video conferencing duo

All modern laptop webcams capture a 720p video sequence (except for the Surface Pro, which supports Full HD mode). This allows you to communicate with your friends or colleagues via videoconferencing in good conditions.

On the other hand, laptop manufacturers have made efforts since the beginning of Covid to incorporate better quality microphones in order to capture sound well. But these webcams do not all work in infrared, and therefore cannot be used to unlock access to the system by simple recognition of the user’s face (Windows Hello).

In this case, to secure your files, it is preferable that your laptop comes with an extension Fingerprint reader (Also compatible with Windows Hello).
