Motorola has just announced a new concept of a rollable smartphone a screen that expands and contracts at the touch of a button. Features of Lenovo’s rollable concept phone a 5-inch OLED screen that can be enlarged to 6.5 inches, when unfolded. This makes it more compact than the iPhone 13 mini in its small mode, and almost the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max when fully expanded. The company has no plans to release the device yet, as it is still in the concept phase.

The announcement comes after Motorola announced the third-generation Razr in China in August. Motorola’s approach to rollable smartphones differs from some of the other concepts we’ve seen so far. For example, companies like Samsung and TCL have developed concept devices with screens that extend horizontally instead of vertically to switch between smartphone and tablet mode.

With its concept, Motorola wants to offer a smartphone that can change the screen size depending on the situation, instead of developing a smartphone-tablet hybrid. On the other hand, it takes a while before you can buy a rollable phone. Ross Young, co-founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, believes that “ rollable could fill some gaps in current full-size foldables, such as the Galaxy Z Fold series.

Samsung is the market leader when it comes to foldable phones. The South Korean company accounts for 62% of the global foldable phone market, while Huawei landed second with 16%, according to Counterpoint research. The same report also suggests that the foldable phone market is expected to grow by 73% in 2022.
