LG’s new ‘invisible’ speakers could revolutionize in-car sound

LG Display will release slim and vibrant car speakers in the first half of 2023, the company announced this week. The Thin actuator sound solution has passport-like dimensions and dispenses with many of the bulkier parts of typical car speakers.

LG Display is known for developing display panel technologies and supplying them to various companies, including the consumer brand LG. The new loudspeaker does not use a cone, magnet or voice coil and does not require a loudspeaker grille. Instead, the speaker relies on what the company describes as a ” film-like excitation technology “, That rocks the billboardsand different materials in the body» to create “3D” sound that LG Display claims is as good as that produced by traditional car speakers.

LG even teamed up with a “global audio company” to develop the speakers, but whether that’s impressive or not can’t be said as LG Display didn’t specify the name of the partner.

The exciters are compact, making theThin actuator sound solutiona certain versatility in terms of placement and frees up space in cars. LG Display plans to use this solution in vehicle dashboards, headrests, headliners and pillars, for example. The speaker measures 150 × 90 × 2.5 mm and weighs 40 g. In its announcement, LG Display said the thickness was 10% less than a typical car speaker and the weight was 30% less.

LG Display said it will showcase its speakers at CES in Las Vegas in January. While LG Display’s car speakers should offer car manufacturers more choices when it comes to speaker placement, sound quality remains the big question for all potential partners and drivers.
