Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer a Manchester United player. The English Premier League club officially announced on Twitter the departure of the 37-year-old Portuguese striker, winner of five Ballons d’Or, by “mutual agreement, effective immediately”.
The Portuguese striker was of course no longer in the plans of new ManU manager Erik ten Hag, who arrived this summer. If he played ten league games, he only played three in total. He played a total of 21 games with the Red Devils this season with a record of 5 goals and 4 assists, far from his usual standards.
“After talks with Manchester United, we have agreed to terminate our contract,” Cristiano Ronaldo said in a statement. “I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. I feel it’s a good time to look for a new challenge. I wish Manchester United the best.”
For its part, the Mancunian club added briefly: “The club thanks him for his immense contribution during his two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family a bright future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under the leadership of Erik ten Hag and working together to achieve success on the pitch.”
