In Flanders all high school graduates can work in childcare

That’s what Flemish Health Minister Hilde Krewitz told parliament on Tuesday in response to a question from Cohen Daniels (N-VA). The measure was taken at the request of the sector, the minister said.

The childcare sector faces a major staff shortage in the north of the country. About 1,100 vacant lots were identified at the end of December.

“Many of the candidates seemed to have experience, for example, as after-school care managers, or in the welfare field more broadly. Their skills have been underutilized to carry out these functions with important responsibilities to society,” the minister explained.

During recruitment, organizers must always ensure the quality of the staff recruited, he added, facing concerns expressed by the deputy minister. Training and coaching are planned.
