ASUS announces ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro: the smartphones of excess

Taiwanese manufacturer Asus insists on smartphones built for gaming, and it’s a growing niche that it wants to keep going with everything. And here is the fifth generation with the new generation ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro.

Brute force

It’s hard to talk about gaming smartphones without talking about performance. Asus has chosen the most powerful ARM chip, the recent Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC which is chipped at 4nm for better efficiency than its predecessor.

This chip also integrates Adreno 730 GPU Qualcomm, whose promises are also great. In addition to the SoC, ROG Phone 6 is equipped with up to 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM, as well as UFS 3.1 flash storage.

Finally, in addition to 5G, it offers Wi-Fi 6E support with a multi-antenna configuration to increase wireless speed and stability tenfold.

Futuristic design

To achieve out-of-the-box performance, the ROG Phone 6’s design has been completely overhauled. First, the SoC is installed at the heart of the device. It is surrounded by two large batteries. Various heat dissipation mechanisms are used which ASUS calls GameCool 6. Various components are used to extract heat and distribute heat more widely on the back of the device to avoid overheating and impact. “stuffy”.

Asus has also updated the AeroActive Cooler 6. This is active cooling, in the form of an attachment that clings to the phone, which recovers heat from the back of the smartphone and separates it via fans.

LED screens and lights everywhere

In terms of design, ROG Phone 6 is overkill all the way with its so-called futuristic design, geometric shapes, RGB LEDs…And even a PMOLED display on the back. This small screen displays the battery percentage, notifications, etc. It’s unnecessary, but it’s cool with 60 different animations to customize according to your tastes and desires.

The device is IPX4 certified, a first for a gaming smartphone. This means that it will be able to withstand some splashes, despite its breathable design.

6.78 inch AMOLED display, with an aspect ratio of 20.4:9 with a definition of 2448 x 1080 pixels or a resolution of 395 pixels per inch. It’s an HDR10+ certified display, whose brightness is advertised at 800 nits and up to 1,200 nits under certain conditions (APL 1). The maximum refresh rate is 165 Hz.

Two 3000 mAh batteries

Autonomy side, Asus has installed two 3000mAh batteries for a total of 6000mAh. To charge the phone we find Quick Charge 5.0 technology, in addition to HyperCharge which offers PowerDelivery 3.0 support and also PPS. In total, charge up to 65W using the included charger.

With 65 watts of power, it is able to recharge from 0 to 100% in 42 minutes. On paper, that’s 10 minutes less than the previous model.

Like previous ROG Phones, there are also a number of accessories. The AeroActive Cooler 6 takes center stage: It’s an active cooler that grips to your phone and connects via a second USB-C port. You can then use it while charging your smartphone with the other connection.

The audio part has been particularly taken care of by Asus with its dual stereo speakers. Each speaker uses the Cirrus Logic CS35L45 chip, which provides various options for achieving high definition sound. In addition, the Qualcomm chip also features adaptive aptX, aptX low latency, and LDAC and AAC support.

Sony cameras

On the camera side, Asus has committed to updating its main sensor: it’s the Sony IMX766 which is found in many high-end smartphones from 2021 to 2022. This sensor delivers 12.5MP stills with a Quad Bayer filter, That is, the original 50 megapixels. You can also shoot in 8K at 24 frames per second, as in Samsung Galaxy S smartphones.

In addition, there is a second 13-megapixel wide-angle camera and a third 5-megapixel camera for macro photography.

On the software front, ROG Phone 6s includes Android 12 with two interfaces to choose from: ROG UI or Zen UI. The former is more of a gaming genre, and the latter is closer to a pure Android experience. In addition, at least two major updates are planned, as well as 24 months of security updates.

The differences

The main difference between the “Basic” version and the “Pro” version is the presence of a PMOLED display on the back. In addition, the Pro version has up to 18GB of RAM, compared to 16GB in the entry-level version.
