a brace from Richarlison lets Brazil win against Serbia (2-0)

A second-half assist from centre-forward Richarlison gave Brazil a 2-0 win after a long battle against a heroic Serbian defense as the two teams opened for the World Cup in Doha on Thursday. The beautiful evening of the “Seleçao” is nevertheless tarnished by a big black mark with the departure of Neymar ten minutes before the end of the match due to injury.

The Seleçao thus take the lead in group G on goal difference, level with Switzerland on points, triumphing 1-0 against Cameroon in the early afternoon. Brazilians and Swiss face each other on Monday (5pm) on the second day.

At the Lusail Stadium where the final will be played on December 18, Brazil immediately took the game on their own, with a very active Neymar and not sparing his defensive runs either, until his replacement apparently fell in one foot on the 80th.

For an hour, however, the Serbian defense with its great size, remarkably placed in front of the excellent goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, defeated the many attempts.

Because Brazil very clearly dominated this encounter (24 shots against 4 over the whole game according to Fifa statistics) and largely deserved their victory.

In the first period, Tite’s team had three great opportunities. The first in the 27th minute, but the giant Milinkovic-Savic emerged victorious at the feet of Vinicius Jr, ideally launched by Auriverde’s captain Thiago Silva.

Raphinha then found himself alone against the Serbian goal after a one-two with Paqueta, but his too soft shot from the left was caught by the Torino goalkeeper (35th).

Six minutes later it was Vinicius, alarmed by Casemiro, who seemed very close to opening the scoring by taking advantage of an error by Nikola Milenkovic, but the latter recovered by returning to save the Real Madrid striker’s shot (41st ) to counter.

It was then wondered how much longer the Serbian defenses would hold out against these waves of yellow and green attacks. Insane domination, to the point that Dragan Stojkovic’s men failed to put a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes!

Wonderful goal from Richarlison

The scenario was repeated from the beginning of the second period and Raphinha was beaten again by Milinkovic-Savic (46th) after stealing the ball from Nemanja Gudelj.

Neymar had a good chance with a whistled free kick from ideal distance for a foul on himself, but his shot was deflected by the Serbian wall (49th).

After a shot from Alex Sandro at the bottom of the opposing goal’s right-hand column, Brazil eventually found the opening and release through their striker Richarlison, who sent a ball into goal which was pushed back at his feet by Milinkovic-Savic. a Vinicius Jr (63rd) strike launched by Neymar.

Obliged to discover themselves from then on, the Serbs managed to be dangerous, especially on corners, but exposed themselves to Brazilian counter-attacks.

And on one of them, the Tottenham striker offered himself a double, freeing his own from a series of left control-rotating right blows (73rd). Awesome !

The score remained there despite a new goal from Gabriel Jesus on the crossbar (81st).

Brazil can be reassured by this introduction, against an opponent who was already in its group at the 2918 World Cup in Russia. Serbia will have to show more offensive if it wants to finally cross the hens’ course after the failures in 2010 and 2018.
